The upper levels

The upper levels

Offering panoramic views of Rome, these levels were where the general public sat.

The upper levels of the Colosseum, known as the “maenianum secundum” and “maenianum summum,” offered a spectacular view of the arena and were primarily reserved for the general public, including Rome’s lower classes. These higher tiers provided a different perspective on the events, allowing spectators to take in the grandeur of the entire amphitheater and its surroundings. From these heights, the roaring of the crowd and the intensity of the gladiatorial battles could be fully appreciated. Today, visitors who climb to the upper levels of the Colosseum can enjoy breathtaking views of the ancient arena and the city of Rome, gaining a true sense of the monument’s vast scale and its role in Roman society.
