The Emperor’s box

The Emperor’s box

The special seating area reserved for the emperor and other VIPs.

The Emperor’s Box, or “Pulvinar,” at the Colosseum was the most prestigious seat in the entire amphitheater. Located on the podium level, this specially designed area provided the emperor and his guests with a prime view of the gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, and public spectacles. Adorned with luxurious decorations and positioned centrally, the Emperor’s Box symbolized power and authority, allowing the emperor to be seen by all while he observed the events below. It was from this vantage point that the emperor could signal the fate of gladiators, granting mercy or ordering death with a simple gesture. Today, visitors can view the remnants of the Emperor’s Box, imagining the influence and presence of those who once occupied this exclusive seat of command and privilege.
