The Underground (Hypogeum)

The Underground (Hypogeum)

A network of tunnels and chambers where gladiators and animals were kept before entering the arena.

The Underground, or Hypogeum, of the Colosseum was the complex system of tunnels, chambers, and passages located beneath the arena floor. This subterranean area was the operational center for all the events held above, serving as a backstage for gladiators, wild animals, and stage machinery. The Hypogeum contained two levels filled with cages, holding cells, and intricate pulley systems used to lift gladiators, animals, and props directly onto the arena floor through trapdoors and elevators. It was here that the combatants awaited their turn, often in darkness and tension, before emerging into the blinding light of the Colosseum to face their fate. Today, visitors can explore parts of this underground maze, uncovering the secrets of how the grand spectacles of ancient Rome were orchestrated from behind the scenes.
