L'histoire

The Domus Aurea was built between 64 and 68 AD after the Great Fire of Rome, by order of Emperor Nero, who desired a new, monumental imperial residence. The palace covered about 80 hectares, spanning a vast area between the Palatine, Caelian, and Esquiline Hills. Equipped with an artificial lake, lush gardens, colonnades, and rooms decorated with gold, gems, and precious marble, the Domus Aurea was the symbol of Nero’s power and vanity. After Nero’s death, Emperor Vespasian ordered much of the villa to be buried to make way for the Colosseum, while other successors repurposed or destroyed its structures to erase all traces of the hated emperor’s work. However, the remains of the Domus Aurea were rediscovered in the 15th century, sparking the interest of Renaissance artists who found inspiration in its frescoed decorations.
